Messi had the area of his magical left peg usually covered in matches by a sock on full display while on duty with Argentina and the result is shocking.

Where once there was an intricate design, he now has solid black – a sock in itself – with only his customay No 10 and two hands by the name of his son Thiago.

Solid black has covered up flowers, wings, a football and a sword.

Whatever the reasoning, Messi will be hoping it helps a bid to turn around the fortunes of Argentina in World Cup qualifying.

They are currently sixth in South American qualification group and need a top-four place to qualifying automatically, with their next task a tough one against Brazil in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday night.
